Taking my first step

Laurie takes her first step to start her business.

I don't know if I mentioned it, but Riverdale Park-Univeristy Park Patch editor actually is helping me to get going on this small business thing. I have been noodling about it a lot, wanting to get it done, but, like many of us, have been procrastinating. By agreeing to blog, my feet are now in the proverbial fire.

Where to start? I am sure it's a question many of us have had when we have an idea for what we think would be a great business. And we want to make sure we do it right.

Sunday morning I got up and was thinking "Small business, I am a small, woman-owned business." And so I Googled "Maryland small business start up." Surprise! There is a Maryland Small Business Development page. There it was, "Smart Start, Gettting Started." And another link, "Our Locations." Clicking on that, and then identifying that I was in Prince Georges County, took me to the office in College Park and a Business Innovation Center in Wheaton.

I played with the College Park site and learned about classes, one-on-one counseling and a whole raft of other things. But what caught my attention was a class, for only $50, called "Smart Start--Entrepreneuer 101." The description sounded like what I needed to make sure that I didn't misstep so early in my startup, so I have signed up for the class.

There are other classes that I will most likely sign up for as well, but for now, I am on my way!
