2.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes MoCo, DC Region Early Tuesday

An earthquake considered small by the U.S. Geological Survey shook Montgomery County, D.C. and other Maryland counties Tuesday morning.

ROCKVILLE, MD — A 2.3 magnitude earthquake shook Montgomery County early Tuesday morning, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Considered small, the earthquake occurred 1 a.m. and orginiated 3 kilometers west of the City of Rockville.

More that 200 people reported feeling a rumbling or loud noise, according to WTOP.

Listeners from Northwest D.C. and Montgomery, Prince George's an Howard counties in Maryland told WTOP they felt a rumbling and a loud noise.

USGS asked anyone who felt the earthquake to fill out a survey on its website.
