Aerial Rescue Of Injured Horseback Rider In Montgomery County

A woman seriously injured in a riding accident was hoisted out of the woods near Brookeville and flown to a hospital by helicopter.

BROOKEVILLE, MD — A woman who was thrown from a horse and kicked had to be hoisted from the accident scene deep in the woods up into a Maryland State Police helicopter and flown to a hospital Thursday afternoon, according to authorities. The 67-year-old victim was injured while riding on a remote farm in the Brookeville area.

Rescue crews from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue reached the patient about 45 minutes after the 911 call. Because of the severity of the woman’s injuries and the remote location of the accident in the woods, Montgomery County firefighters requested a Maryland State Police helicopter for an aerial rescue.

Pilots maneuvered the AW-139 helicopter into position 200 feet above the scene and a trooper/rescue technician was lowered. The patient was secured in the rescue device, hoisted into the aircraft and flown to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., for treatment, state police said.
