MONTGOMERY CO., MD — Eight people, including one child, were displaced Sunday after a "significant" fire broke out inside a Rockville home.
Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, said the accidental fire at the 400 block of North Horners was electrical in nature and that it had originated in an interior bedroom.
First responders were dispatched to the area shortly after 4:15 p.m. At the scene, firefighters found heavy fire and thick, black smoke billowing from the first floor of the two-story home.
Initial reports indicated people had been trapped inside the home, but were later removed from the grounds. Piringer said all eight individuals were evaluated for injuries, which were listed as "not serious."
"Pretty significant fire, significant damage," Piringer said. "The fire was basically knocked down pretty quickly, but there were some hotspots that got in through some concealed areas of this home. "
"The good thing is no serious injuries," he said.
Piringer said in his latest update that the fire caused about $400,000 of damages.
The home was fitted with smoke alarms, which had alerted residents to the blaze, according to Piringer. The family is in touch with the Red Cross for assistance.
