MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Will Jawando, an at-large councilmember on the Montgomery County Council, has declared victory in the primary race for county executive.
Jawando was facing off against four other Democratic contenders, including fellow councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Evan Glass.
"I’m honored to be the Democratic nominee for Montgomery County Executive, and I’m ready to fight every single day for every resident of this county," reads a statement released by Jawando.
"I’m deeply grateful to Governor Wes Moore, Senator Angela Alsobrooks and the over 40 organizations who believed in our vision and for standing with us. Now the real work begins, and together, we’re going to deliver for every single person who calls Montgomery County home."
Jawando's statement comes as the primary votes have yet to be finalized by the Maryland State Board of Elections.
The latest unofficial data shows Jawando with a healthy lead after he secured 40,615 ballots (40.11% of the votes).

The Associated Press has not yet called the Democratic winner for the county executive race.
Montgomery County received more than 126,000 mail-in ballots during the 2026 primary election cycle. Bethesda Today reported the next mail-in ballot canvass isn't expected until Saturday at 10 a.m.

Jawando told the outlet Friday that he intends to hit the ground running and plans to "appoint the smartest, most diverse cabinet."
Once declared, the winner of the Democratic primary will face off against Republican county executive nominee Esther Wells in November.
