ROCKVILLE, MD — The City of Rockville was named Montgomery County's first Bird City for its efforts in reducing threats and expanding nature education.
Officials said in a Thursday release that the city received the honor through Bird City Maryland, part of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership.
Efforts that were taken into consideration for the recognition included the planting of 2,500 native trees and shrubs at RedGate Park, designation of 12 forest preserves, amended laws requiring bird-friendly glass in new construction, and expanded birding programs, among other initiatives.
The city will be presented with its official recognition during the Dec. 7 City Council meeting.
