Bicyclist Killed at Deadly Rockville Intersection

A Silver Spring man crossing Veirs Mill Road at Turkey Branch Parkway was hit by a car; two other deaths happened at the same last year.

Rockville, MD — A Silver Spring bicyclist died Sunday after he was hit by a car at a problem-plagued Rockville intersection that has been the site of two other fatalities in 18 months.

Montgomery County Police say the fatal collision occurred about 1:21 p.m. on Veirs Mill Road at Turkey Branch Parkway.

Investigators say bicyclist Oscar Mauricio Gutierrez Osorio, 31, of the 12800 block of Teaberry Road in Silver Spring was crossing Veirs Mill Road at Turkey Branch Parkway in the marked crosswalk. A 2003 Honda Accord that was traveling eastbound on Veirs Mill Road collided with the bicycle.

Osorio was taken to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the Honda was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He is identified as Williams Alfo Cordova Siguenza, 42, of the 13000 block of Carney Street in Silver Spring.

This collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at 240-773-6620.

WTOP reports that two other deaths have occurred in the same area in less than two years. The intersection is at the bottom of two steep hills, and has no traffic signals.

In December 2015, a 19-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck by an SUV in the westbound lanes near Turkey Branch Parkway.

In January 2015, a woman was struck and killed at Parkland Drive by a driver who had a green light when the accident happened.
