Before You Remodel, Hold a Family Meeting

Okay, we have something to admit, which you probably know: remodeling causes dust. Any company worth its weight in salt will go out of their way to maintain a clean job site and home during construction. It is our strong opinion, a truly honest company (which are the only ones you should be talking to) will also explain that dust, along with other collateral consequences of remodeling, are unavoidable. Yet, these situations can be managed and your family’s safety and comfort are held in highest priority and not just “thrown out the window.”

Dust will also affect your home and your life in a variety of ways as your project progresses. Of course, the end results will also have many affects (positive ones) and your renovated space will bring new enjoyment and increased functionality to your home.

We recommend that, long before any dust is raised or furniture or the refrigerator is moved, you hold a family meeting about your upcoming renovation. The meeting should cover the wish lists and concerns of all family members regarding their sought-after results for the end product (and don’t forget to ask your young ones about their ideas and preferences – you’d be surprised what they will share with you). It should also go over the actual remodeling process in as much or as little detail as you choose. It’s worth mentioning that some families opt for two meetings to cover the design and renovation separately. Additionally, don’t forget to consider your “aging in place” needs to achieve a remodeled space that is as comfortable for grandma as it is for the kids.

Allowing all residents to express their thoughts and ideas will be helpful in uncovering the collective and individual needs and goals for your project and manage your family’s expectations. Also, be sure to let your remodeler know of your meeting’s outcomes. As good communication is always key, knowing your family’s goals will be essential to your company of choice in producing your successful remodel!
