Christ Episcopal Church in historic Rockville will hold a unique Jazz Vespers service on at 5 p.m. next Sunday, April 22. Jazz Vespers is the Episcopal Church liturgy of evening prayer, with well-known standards from the jazz repertoire taking the place of traditional service music and canticles. Leading the jazz quartet on tenor saxophone is CEC’s own the Rev. John McDuffie, who brought the unique event to the church in 2008. Along with Father McDuffie is a trio of talented musicians including pianist Jim Levy, bassist David Marsh and drummer Coleman O’Donoghue.
Why jazz? Father McDuffie says: “When the powerful dynamic of jazz improvisation becomes a part of worship, the creative and surprising spirit of God is realized. Whether you’re a jazz enthusiast or seeking a church for you and your family, you will surely enjoy this musical evening of worship.”
The service is free to attend, but a free-will offering is accepted. Donations will help organizations that assist homeless and unemployed individuals and families begin a new life.
