Searching for the Right School: What’s Next

Part II of my series on finding the right school for your child.

In part I of my blog, “Searching for the Right School: Where to Begin?” I stated that parents should review one of the least viewed, but one of the most important pages on a school’s website.  That page is the school’s curriculum or curriculum guide.  The heart of any education is academics, so it’s important you know what each school will provide your son/daughter grade-by-grade.  It also serves as a barometer to help you as parents actualize where your child should be developmentally and academically.

Once you have chosen a few schools to pursue, read the curriculum pages from each school for the grade your son/daughter will enter next year.  How do they compare?  Do they match up or is one school more accelerated than the others?  Do they provide instruction in areas that will benefit your child?  Will your child have opportunities to pursue courses of interest?  These are the types of questions you should ask yourself when reviewing each school’s curriculum page.

Next, contact the school and set up a visit.  I strongly suggest a private tour and discussion with someone in admissions.  An open house is great if you are looking for a general overview, but when making a five figure annual investment, it’s important to have detailed information.  What will your child learn?  How will their needs be met?  What is included in the tuition?  How will you prepare my child for the next level?  These are just some of the questions you should ask.  If possible, also ask to speak to a current parent and the teacher your child will have next year.  The information they can provide should prove meaningful in the long run.  I will be back with part III soon.  Have a wonderful holiday season!
