LAUREL (May 16, 2012): The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) proudly announces that once again in 2011, WSSC drinking water met or exceeded the standards for safety and quality as set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The information is detailed in the 2011 Water Quality Report released this week.
The report is being distributed to residents and businesses in Montgomery (Wednesday, May 16 edition) and Prince George’s (Thursday, May 17 edition) counties via the Gazette newspapers. A Spanish language version of the report will be distributed through El Tiempo Latino (Friday, May 18 edition). The report also includes language to address the area’s Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese communities.
“We take great pride in the fact that we have never had a drinking water violation in our 94-year history,” said WSSC General Manager Jerry N. Johnson. “This report is proof of our continuing commitment to provide safe and reliable water to the residents of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.”
The 2011 Water Quality Report also details WSSC’s water sources and updates to the treatment process. One of the largest ultraviolet disinfection systems in the United States now provides an extra layer of protection against harmful pathogens at our Potomac Water Filtration Plant. Construction on ultraviolet disinfection at our Patuxent Plant may begin later this year.
The plants provide an average of 167 million gallons of safe drinking water each day. Quality is guaranteed by rigorous laboratory tests that analyze water for almost 200 substances before it leaves our treatment plants. WSSC also analyzes tap water quality at more than 100 locations in our distribution system in communities throughout Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.
