Chief Of Staff For Council Member Rice Dies After Battle With ALS

County officials mourn the death of Dr. Steven Goldstein, the chief of staff to councilmember Craig Rice, after losing his battle with ALS.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Dr. Steven Goldstein, long-time chief of staff to Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice, has died after a battle with ALS.

Goldstein peacefully passed away at his home on May 27, county officials confirmed on Tuesday. For years, Goldstein worked in politics with Rice: first in the early 2000s when Rice was a Maryland state delegate and then when Rice became a Montgomery County councilmember. He served as Rice's chief of staff for eight years, even while battling the disease.

ALS, which is short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that mainly affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement, such as chewing, walking, and talking.

"For 16 years...he's been there. Right over my shoulder to guide me in the right direction. No one could EVER ask for a better Chief of Staff," Rice wrote in a Facebook post. "He would always support my ideas, no matter how crazy, although he would throw in a little 'are you sure?' along with it."

"Steve, I thank your family, your wife Mary and sons Adam and Jared for sharing you with me all of these years," Rice continued. "There were many days, late nights and weekends that I know could've been spent with them. Your dedication was unmatched and appreciated.
