Hank Dietle's Tavern

Hank Dietle’s has been a labor of love for fans of the county’s oldest licensed bar for many years, serving up cold beer and warm memories since the 1916 store reopened as Hank Dietle’s Tavern in 1950. As development pressures were wiping out history along the pike, longtime fan Tony Huniak took over in 1990 to keep our beloved bar going. When the Quarry House burned in 2015, Tony welcomed Rockabilly Saturday Night to a new venue on the pike, carving out space for dancing in a homey social setting that proved a perfect fit for fans of live roots &amp; retro music. After Hank Dietle’s suffered a devastating fire in February 2018, fans rallied again to save the irreplaceable roadhouse. Chantal “Kiti” Gartner set up a Go Fund Me website to help the out of work employees and teamed with Mark Segraves and others to organize a benefit concert to launch a reconstruction effort. Thanks to their tireless efforts and many fans who contributed, the roof was repaired, the porch rebuilt, critical electrical work done, and interior walls rebuilt. Building on their efforts, three devotees of the historic tavern, Tommy Bowes, Sarah Bonner, and Alan Kresse, along with Gina Cocco, Lisa White, and Tom Helf, teamed up to complete work on the interior, recreate our beloved “Hank Dietle’s Cold Beer” sign, and get the institution rolling again. All are long-time supporters of Maryland’s live music and dance scene—musicians, promoters and entrepreneurs dedicated to ensuring that Hank Dietle’s rides again.

Join us on and around the C &amp;O Canal to hike to some of the biggest known trees in Maryland, including the largest recorded tree in Maryland (a sycamore), the state champion cottonwood, and a magnificent silver maple, 22 feet in circumference. Also nearby is a national contender bitternut hickory. Carole Bergmannn (M-NCPPC Montgomery Parks Forest Ecologist and Botanist, and Forestry Board member) and Joe Howard of the Montgomery County Forestry Board will lead the walk. We'll hike about 1.5 miles along natural surface trails; please wear appropriate walking shoes. Fee includes transportation. Please register at ParkPASS.org

Memorial Day Weekend Event - Flags For Our Heroes 

A Giant Display of 756 American flags from Friday, May 22nd through Monday morning, May 25th
Formal inauguration May 23rd at 11:00 a.m., then a ceremony at the Peace Pole in the park. Unusable flag retirement ceremony conducted by local Scout troops on May 24th at dusk.
Free and open to the public, 24 hours a day (lighted at night). Accessible by wheelchair. 
Anyone can sponsor a flag to honor his or her “hero,” for $50. There are also sponsorship packages for businesses and organizations. Proceeds will be used by the Gaithersburg Rotary Foundation for local and international projects.
