Dr. Bernice Sandler, the "Mother of Title IX" will lead off a discussion of the effects of this important legislation on the schools of Montgomery County including--but not limited to--the availability of athletic and other programs for girls and young women.

Some of us remember when girls' teams didn't have access to the better fields and pool times for practice and were forced to take Home Ec. instead of physics. We've moved passed the days when young women needed special permission to enter the "boys'" academic track. Even so, gender bias remains, discouraging female students from the important "STEM" curricula--Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Yes, while things HAVE changed for the better, there are still differences especially in sports, but in academics as well. None of the girls' sports programs bring in the revenue or glory that boys' football does for a school. Title IX has helped us make strides toward equal opportunity, but remains a work in progress. This will be another exciting, informative program for men and women from the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Organization for Women.
