ROCKVILLE, MD — A fifth grader died at Farmland Elementary after a medical incident on Monday morning, multiple news outlets are reporting.

NBC Washington spoke to the boy's mother, who identified him as William Edilzer Cabrera Lozanoand said he had complained of pain before.

“He would say to me, ‘Mami, it hurts here.’ I don’t know if it was his heart. ‘It hurts here,’ he’d say to me," said Santos Mercedes Cabrera Lozano, his mother, to NBC Washington. "But since he wasn’t born here, I didn’t have money to take him to the hospital, since people say it costs so much here."

WJLA published a message Principal April D. Longest sent to parents on Monday after William's death, which she said had not been disclosed to students yet.

"While we have not shared this loss with any of our students, our school psychologist and counselors along with the district-level staff were onsite and available to support our students who were present when the medical emergency occurred," she wrote in the message. "We will continue to have qualified staff onsite to support students and staff as we deal with this loss in the days ahead."

Longest said she would share funeral arrangements with Farmland Elementary School parents when William's family notifies her.
