Gaithersburg Pedestrian Hit, Killed By Car

Montgomery County Police have released the name of a Gaithersburg woman who died after she was hit by a car at an intersection early Monday morning.

Authorities say Muivembet Gelaw, 50, of the 500 block of Skidmore Boulevard in Gaithersburg died at the scene just before 6 a.m. She was walking westbound across South Frederick Avenue at South Westland Drive in the area of the crosswalk.

A silver, 2002 Toyota Camry traveling southbound on South Frederick Avenue driven by Rodolfo S. Guillen, 42, of the 400 block of North Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg, struck Gelaw, police say. He remained on the scene and was not injured.

The intersection is marked with crosswalks and is controlled by traffic and pedestrian signals. Investigators are working to determine what the traffic control devices were indicating at the time of the fatal collision.
