Gun Buyback Day: Rockville Police Host No-Questions-Asked Exchange

Rockville City Police are hosting an anonymous, no-questions-asked gun buyback event on Saturday, Aug. 27 in Rockville.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Rockville City Police are teaming up with Montgomery County Public School's and the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office to buy back firearms in exchange for gift cards.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 27, community members can voluntarily surrender their firearms in the parking lot of the RCPD Station located at 2 West Montgomery Ave., Rockville, MD 20850.

In exchange for their firearms, community members will receive a $100 Visa gift card for functioning handguns, rifles and shotguns. For functioning assault-style weapons and privately made firearms (ghost guns), residents will receive a $200 Visa gift card.

No identification is needed to turn in a firearm during the buyback event and no questions will be asked by police, according to a release. However, RCPD will determine whether the firearms are functional and eligible for gift cards.

To drop off a firearm, members of the public must remain in their vehicles during the entire process. No walk-ups will be allowed. All firearms must be unloaded and kept inside the vehicle's trunk.

All firearms must be functional in order to qualify for the gift card exchange. No matter how many firearms the participant drops off, RCPD reserves the right to limit the number of gift cards each participant receives.

Police will accept non-functioning firearms and ammunition during the buyback event, but they will not be eligible for the gift card exchange.

"Every gun turned in is one less gun that could be used in a serious crime, suicide, or domestic violence incident, or accidentally discharged by a child," RCPD said, in a release. "Keeping guns off community streets, out of the hands of youth and out of our schools remains the highest priority for all. This is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to dispose of an unwanted firearm voluntarily, anonymously, and safely."
