LGBTQ Pride Events In Montgomery County Set
Events in Montgomery County include a Pride flag raising ceremony with the county executive and a drag performance at Denizens brewery.
ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery County Councilmember Evan Glass will be leading a series of LGBTQ hosted events through Montgomery County for Pride Month, which is in June.
Events range from a Pride flag raising ceremony with County Executive Marc Elrich to a drag performance at Denizens brewery, an LGBTQ-owned business.
"As the County's first LGBTQ Councilmember, it is an honor for me to lead events that are inclusive and representative of our diverse community," said Glass. "Members of the community, friends and allies have all been waiting years to see Pride events hosted right here in Montgomery County. Being part of the LGBTQ family is no longer reserved for gay folks who live in DC; we have a vibrant LGBTQ community here at home."

This year's Pride Month overlaps with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots — the catalyst for the gay rights movement.
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village. The raid sparked a riot and led to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street and in nearby Christopher Park.

"With the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots just a few weeks away, it is important to reflect on how far we have come as a community and how far we still have to go. I hope Pride 2019 is a starting point to have these conversations and create spaces for residents to connect with each other. If you are an LGBTQ person living in Montgomery County, know that you have a whole community behind you," Glass said.
