Local Center Creates Big Event to Support Kids in Africa

WCFC in coordination with the SAMS in Liberia has created Cathay's Connected World, an arts & culture fair & community service event.

The three core aims of Washington Cathay Future Center (WCFC) are to cultivate students’ artistic expression, intellectual development, and leadership potential. They feel that one of the BEST ways to contribute to this mission is through involving our community in social justice work. As such, they have designed the Cathay’s Connected World to actively engage our community in meaningful activities that will not only educate our community itself, but will connect them to communities around the world that are committed to the same dream of providing quality education for all. Each activity will be connected to a fundraising system to provide support for those in need.

This spring the WCFC is are proud to say they have selected to connect with Sherman Adams Sr. Memorial School (SAMS) in Duazon, Libreria, Africa as one of their first of many partners. “The Sherman Adams Sr. Memorial School came about from an overwhelming need for primary education in the mostly impoverished township of Duazon.” SAMS and its programs include academic enrichment with a foundation in health and wellbeing, promote health equity, provide access to education to resource poor and needy populations, and support the revitalization of the Liberian Healthcare System. SAMS has built its first primary day school in Duazon and will need lots of supplies and support. The school has been registered as a certified Non-profit Organization with the Liberian Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs. The building is situated in the township of Duazon in Lower Margibi County, located on the Robertsfield highway, about 2 miles from the Schefflin military barracks.

During our Cathay’s Connected World event attendees will have a chance to learn more about SAMS and the local culture, organize donations for the school, and contribute to a large art project, a piece of which will be placed at SAMS and at WCFC. The students may even have the possibility to work with local dignitaries on this wonderful project. The art project in particular will act as a reminder that the world needs to work together for progress.
