Man Wanted For Armed Assault Of Letter Carrier In Damascus

Postal Inspectors and Montgomery County Police are searching for a man who allegedly assaulted a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier.

DAMASCUS, MD — Postal Inspectors and detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department continue to investigate the March 15 assault of a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier that occurred while she was delivering mail in the Damascus area. Investigators released a computer-created composite of the suspect and are asking for the public’s help to identify him.

At approximately 12:10 p.m., a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier was delivering mail in the 9400 block of Holsey Road, when the male suspect approached her while she was in the truck. The man asked the victim if she had a package for an address on Holsey Road, police said.

The letter carrier told the man she did not have a package for that address, and the man then reached into the mail truck. The letter carrier attempted to roll up the truck’s windows and was assaulted by the suspect when he used an unknown object to cut the sleeve of the jacket that she was wearing. The woman, who was not injured in the assault, drove the mail truck away from the suspect and contacted the police.

Assault of a Postal Service employee is punishable by a prison term of up to 20 years. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of this suspect.

Police describe the suspect as a white male in his late teens or early twenties. He has dark hair and a medium build. He was last seen wearing a black knit cap and thick black glasses, police said.
