Memorial Day 2016: Rockville Parade, Wreath Ceremony, Hometown Holidays
Memorial Day 2016 in Rockville means a parade, wreath ceremony, with the Taste of Rockville and Hometown Holidays ending Sunday night.

ROCKVILLE, MD – Rockville will conclude its weekend-long celebration of the 28th annual Hometown Holidays music festival and will mark Memorial Day with a ceremony and parade on Monday, May 30, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in Rockville Town Center.
The 72nd annual ceremony begins with a musical prelude by the Rockville Concert Band and the Rockville Community Chorus at 9 a.m. The commemoration, hosted by the Mayor and Council, begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes remarks from Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton, a traditional wreath-laying led by American Legion Post 86, and the presentation of colors by the American Legion Post 86 Color Guard and the Rockville City Police Department Honor Guard.
Attendees will also hear from the parade grand marshal and Navy veteran John E. Klansek. Klansek served in the South Pacific during World War II, as part of an amphibious communications unit supporting Marine forces, and then at the naval air station in Honolulu, Hawaii as a radioman.

Following the ceremony, the parade begins at 10:30 a.m. It will proceed from Martins Lane and North Washington Street, turn left on Beall Avenue and right on Maryland Avenue through Rockville Town Center, before making a left on East Montgomery Avenue. The parade will feature drill teams, marching bands, multicultural community groups, military units and more.

The ceremony and parade wrap up Hometown Holidays, which will feature performances by more than 30 local, regional and national bands on four stages, favorite food from local restaurants at the Taste of Rockville, and kids amusements and entertainment (including the return of “the beach” sand pile). The festival runs from 2-10 p.m. on Sunday, May 29.

City Offices Closed for Holiday
Rockville City Hall and some city facilities will be closed Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.
Recycling, yard waste and refuse collection will be suspended on May 30 and made one day later. Collection regularly made on Monday will be made on Tuesday; regularly scheduled Tuesday collection will occur on Wednesday, and so on. The following Rockville facilities will be closed May 30:
- Croydon Creek Nature Center.
- Glenview Mansion, including the mansion’s art gallery.
- Lincoln Park, Thomas Farm and Twinbrook community centers.
- Rockville Senior Center.

Outdoor Pool Opens
The Rockville Swim and Fitness Center’s indoor pool and fitness center will be open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. The outdoor pools open at noon for family recreation swim. However, due to the city’s Memorial Day parade, access to Martins Lane and the center’s parking lot will be restricted until after noon. Parking fees at city-owned meters will be suspended for the day.

Montgomery County Closings
Here's a list of what's open, closed and has reduced hours on Memorial Day, from Montgomery Community Media:
County Offices – closed.
Libraries – closed.
County Liquor stores – all county liquor stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Recreation – all indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities will be open; administrative offices, senior centers and community recreation centers will be closed.
Montgomery Parks – holiday scheduled available, here.
Ride On – Will operate on a Sunday schedule.
Metrorail –Will operate on a Sunday schedule.
Metrobus – Will operate on a Sunday schedule.
TRiPS Commuter Stores (Silver Spring and Friendship Heights) – closed.
Refuse/recycling pickup – no collection, all collections scheduled on or after the holiday will be made one day later in the week. Monday collections on Tuesday; Tuesday collections made on Wednesday; Wednesday collections on Thursday; Thursday collections on Friday; and Friday collections on Saturday.
The Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station – closed.
Parking at public garages, lots, curbside meters – free.
MCPS Schools and Administrative Offices – closed
State offices and courts – closed.
