ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery College, a public institution serving more than 60,000 students a year, has fallen victim to a fraud scheme, according to school administrators.

Officials on Thursday announced that the incident occurred last month and "resulted in a financial loss." Details surrounding the case — including how much money was lost and who may be behind it — have not been released.

The only information Montgomery College gave about the incident was in a press release published Thursday. In the statement, officials said the college "took swift action to notify law enforcement and initiated an internal investigation into this fraud event."

They added that the Baltimore Field Office of the FBI is handling the case as the college works to "recover the full amount."

The incident, according to officials, will not interfere with student activities or school operations. And the college has not found evidence that student and employee data — such as names, addresses, and emails — were compromised.
