Montgomery Councilmember Makes 'Most Influential People for the Hispanic Community' List
Councilmember Nancy Navarro has been selected as one of the 100 Most Influential People for the Hispanic Community in Washington, D.C.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Navarro, the first Latina to serve on the Council, has been selected as one of the 100 Most Influential People for the Hispanic Community of the Washington, D.C. Metro Area in the inaugural “Powermeter” of El Tiempo Latino Newspaper. The 100 honorees will be formally announced in El Tiempo’s Latino’s edition that will be published on Friday, June 23.
Councilmember Navarro, who chairs the Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, will be among those featured in the newspaper’s special “Powermeter” section in that edition. The honorees will be saluted at a reception from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 26, at The Washington Post building at 1301 K Street NW in Washington, D.C.

Councilmember Navarro was elected to represent District 4 on the Montgomery Council in a special election in May 2009, and was reelected in 2010 and 2014. In addition to chairing the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, she has served on the Education Committee since 2013.
“I am honored to be included among the region’s most influential people by El Tiempo Latino,” said Councilmember Navarro. “One of the most important parts of my job as a Councilmember is to speak for those who have no voice in determining public policy. With the rhetoric at the national level, it’s more important than ever for me to stay true to my progressive values, to stand up for the voiceless, and to stay vigilant to protect and promote justice.”

Councilmember Navarro served as Council president in 2013 and as Council vice president in 2012. In 2011, President Obama appointed Councilmember Navarro to the President’s Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. Prior to joining the Council, Councilmember Navarro was a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education.
Councilmember was born in Venezuela and lives in Colesville with her husband.
