Montgomery County 4th Of July Fireworks: What's Legal, What's Not
Are fireworks legal in Montgomery County? Here's everything you need to know ahead of the July 4th holiday.

ROCKVILLE, MD — The Fourth of July holiday is fast approaching, and you might be wondering if fireworks are legal in Montgomery County. The short answer is no.
If you don't have a lawful permit, fireworks can turn your Independence Day celebration into a tragedy. That's why local and state fire officials are reminding residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals.
"There were 17 fireworks-related incidents reported in Maryland last year," said State Fire Marshal Brian Geraci. "Prevention of burns, injuries, and fires has always been a top priority of our office. The safest way to enjoy fireworks this July 4th holiday season is to attend one of the many public fireworks displays throughout the state."

Depending on where you live and where you will celebrate the July 4th holiday, there are different rules on what you can buy and use. But in Montgomery County, it is illegal to possess or discharge fireworks — including sparklers.
"A sparkler can burn hot enough to melt gold," said Dr. Dean Fiergang, an ophthalmologist and executive board member of the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. "While advancements in ophthalmic surgery have come a long way, there is very little that can be done when temperatures that extreme make contact with the human eye."
