WHY: On behalf of the Greater Olney community of 40,000, we reject Governor Larry Hogan’s and the Montgomery County Council’s buckling to special interests and breaking the promise by the Governor’s Maryland State Highway Administrator Gregory Slater and County Executive Marc Elrich to seek an alternate site for the necessary communications tower that is critical to public safety and first responder needs.

Governor Hogan’s transportation team, the Montgomery County Council and government technocrats have known about the failing emergency response system for 5-10 years, yet failed to notify citizens of the problem, concealing their plans to build giant towers in our communities.

In the wake of their longtime lack of urgency and effectiveness, elected and staff officials and contractors decided to blame Olney for sudden system outages, which are in truth, unrelated to a coherent, fact-based tower location process and timetable. Mysteriously, tower project team members refuse to consider viable alternatives in the Olney area for contrived reasons.

We are mobilizing to demand transparency and accountability, meet with government officials, and agree upon the best solution for all residents in Maryland and Montgomery County.
