Rockville Salon Raises Money For Suicide Prevention
Progressions salon hosted a fundraiser to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

From Progressions: Progressions salon spa store held a successful raffle fundraiser to benefit umttr (You Matter) during September’s National Suicide Prevention Month.With the generous help of the salon’s guests and local community, Progressions raised $10,000 for suicide prevention – to help break the stigma of suicide, stop the silence, and save a life.
Funds raised from the raffle were donated to umttr in memory of Progressions team member MaguiliaYi’s 30-year old grandson who passed away in April.The raffle’s grand prize was a pair of signed Sugar Ray Leonard boxing gloves plus a $2,000 gift card.

“Teen suicide is a growing concern, and mental illness is one of the most frequent causes,” notes Progressions salon spa store founder Cindy Feldman, who is mindful of the struggle.“To bring about change, strong advocacy is needed to heighten suicide awareness — from the warning signs to prevention.”
In 2013, umttr was founded by students and families fromWinston Churchill High School in Montgomery County in response to the tragic suicide of fellow student and athlete Evan Rosenstock.Their mission is to foster a community of students who know that they matter, and to place mental well-being and caring support at the forefront of teens’ daily interactions.

Educating the community on mental illness,suicide prevention, and “The 5 Signs”is a major goal of umttr. The five signs of suffering are withdrawal, agitation, hopelessness, poor self care, and personality change.The organization promotes reaching out, inspiring hope, and offering help to anyone exhibiting these signs.
