What's Open, Closed Labor Day 2016 in Rockville Area

Many Rockville offices and services will be closed Sept. 5 for the Labor Day holiday. But, a parade, 5K and more are planned in the area.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Rockville City Hall and the following city facilities will be closed Monday, Sept. 5, in observance of the Labor Day holiday: Lincoln Park, Thomas Farm and Twinbrook community centers, the Rockville Senior Center, Croydon Creek Nature Center, Glenview Mansion and F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre.

The Rockville Swim and Fitness Center will be open. For individual swim and fitness center facilities hours, visit www.rockvillemd.gov/swimcenter.

Recycling, yard waste and refuse collection will be suspended on Sept. 5 and made one day later than usual throughout the week, with Thursday collection occurring on Friday, Sept. 9. Montgomery County's aquatic centers will be open, while schools and government offices will be closed for Labor Day. If you're looking for something to do in the region that day, there's an interfaith 5K in Boyds, Irish music fest in Glen Echo, and a parade in Gaithersburg.

Glen Echo Labor Day Art Show & Irish Dance and Music Showcase
Monday, September 5, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm, Glen Echo Park, 7300 MacArthur Blvd.
The 46th Annual Labor Day Art Show at Glen Echo Park will be held in the Spanish Ballroom from Saturday, September 3 through Monday, September 5 from noon - 6 pm each day. The Irish Dance and Music Showcase features an afternoon of Irish music and dance performances. This takes place in the Bumper Car Pavilion from 1 to 6 p.m. Some of the groups scheduled to perform include The Culkin School of Traditional Irish Dance, The Shannon Dunne Dance, The Hedge Band, and the faculty of the Washington Conservatory of Music’s Traditional Irish Music Program – Tina Eck, Keith Carr, Jesse Winch, Mitch Fanning.

Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade

Monday, September 5, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Olde Town Gaithersburg

The Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade returns to the streets of Olde Towne on Monday, September 5, at 1 p.m. Now in its 78th year, this rain or shine event includes ethnic dance groups, antique cars and fire trucks, clowns, high school marching bands, and an assortment of community groups, equestrian units, and more.

Monday, September 5, 8:00 am - 10:00 am, Maryland Soccerplex, 18031 Central Park Circle in Boyds. As a symbol of interfaith respect, a 5K race on Labor Day, Sept. 5. Here's the list of county facility closures, what's open and what has modified hours.

  • County Offices – closed
  • Libraries – closed
  • County Liquor stores – all Country liquor stores will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All stores with Monday deliveries will get their morning deliveries at the normal time.
  • Recreation – Bethesda, Germantown, Western County, Wheaton/Glenmont and MLK outdoor aquatic facilities will be open from noon to 6 p.m. Olney Indoor Swim Center will be open normal hours; all other indoor aquatic facilities, as well as the Long Branch and Upper County outdoor pools, will be closed. Administrative offices, senior centers and community centers are closed.

  • Ride On – Will operate on a Sunday schedule
  • Metrorail – Information available at www.wmata.com
  • Metrobus – Information available at www.wmata.com
  • TRiPS Commuter Stores (Silver Spring and Friendship Heights) – closed

  • The Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station - closed
  • Parking at public garages, lots, curbside meters – free
  • MCPS Schools and Administrative Offices – closed
