ROCKVILLE, MD — Columbus Day is that relatively odd holiday during which some traditional closings are the norm — unless they're not.
Here's a brief rundown of what's open and what's not Monday, Oct. 9, in Rockville and Montgomery County:
Government offices
It's a federal holiday, so federal and state government offices will be closed, but Rockville city offices are open and the city council meets at 7 p.m.

There is no change in the normal trash pickup schedule.

Monday is a staff development day, so Montgomery County Public Libraries are closed.
Schools
Oct. 9 is a normal school day for Montgomery County Public Schools, with open houses scheduled.
Bus service
Ride-On buses operate on a weekday schedule for Columbus Day.
Post offices
The day is a holiday for postal workers, so don’t expect mail delivery and your local post office is closed.
Banks
Most banks are closed for Columbus Day, with a few exceptions, including Wells Fargo and TD Bank.
Grocery and retail stores
Major grocery store chains will operate normal hours on Monday, as will retailers like Target and Walmart.
