Severna Park Native Selected By Packers In NFL Draft: ‘Surreal Feeling’

Trey Smack, a three-year starter at the University of Florida, was drafted by the Packers during the third round on Saturday.

SEVERNA PARK, MD — Anne Arundel County native Trey Smack is feeling "starstruck" after he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2026 NFL Draft last weekend, according to a report.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst sent both of Green Bay's seventh-rounders to Seattle in exchange for the final pick of the sixth round to make Smack, of Severna Park, the only kicker selected by the team.

Smack, a three-year starter at the University of Florida and a two-time semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, is the fourth kicker drafted by the Packers in the last 36 years, joining Mason Crosby (2007), Brett Conway (1997) and Anders Carlson (2023).

“It’s just a surreal feeling, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. I’m just really glad that I got drafted by the Packers. I’m so excited to be part of such a storied organization,” Smack told the Capital Gazette on Monday.

He added, "I was completely starstruck and I kind of still am."

The 6-foot-1, 188-pound kicker drilled 53 of 64 field goals at Florida, including a school-record 10 makes from beyond 50 yards on only 13 tries, according to a statement from the Packers. Smack also made at least 80% of his field goals during each of his seasons as the Gators' kicker.

"We thought he was the best kicker in this draft," Gutekunst said. "And (Packers special teams coordinator Cam Achord) had a very strong opinion about that, as did I, and I thought it felt fortunate to be able to acquire him."

Before Smack decided to kick in college, he was an accomplished lacrosse player at Severna High School.

Smack will travel to Green Bay on Thursday to participate in the team’s three-day rookie minicamp being held over the weekend, according to the Capital Gazette.

"It really does mean a lot. It's a surreal feeling," Smack said of getting drafted during an interview with the Packers. "I still got the shakes a little bit. I'm like, 'Wow, is this really happening right now?' It's an amazing feeling."
