Severna Park Spill Dumped Over 2K Gallons Of Sewage Into Creek

SEVERNA PARK, MD — Of the more than 16,000 gallons of sewage that leaked in Severna Park over the weekend, officials estimate just over 2,000 gallons spilled into a local waterway.

The overflow was reported Monday, with authorities detailing that the leak was caused by a main break that happened Sunday in the 800 block of Ritchie Highway.

The Department of Public Works initially said the majority of the leak was contained on land after some 16,200 gallons of sewage spilled near the Cypress Creek.

DPW spokesperson Amy Mininger told Patch that an estimated 2,100 gallons of sewage reached Cypress Creek.

Authorities said impacted areas were limed and vacuumed.

Residents who came in contact with the impacted area are urged to wash themselves and their clothing with soap and warm water.

The overflow was reported to the county's Department of Health and the Maryland Department of the Environment.
