"Mermaids of the Chesapeake II" Exhibit

Benfield Gallery, 485 Jumpers Hole Road in Severna Park, is pleased to present Mermaids of the Chesapeake II an exhibit of paintings, linoleum block prints, sculpture and scrimshaw featuring mystical mermaids. The exhibit opens on April 3 and continues through May 12, 2011.    A meet the artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2 – 4 pm.

Mermaids have long fascinated us.  Mermaids are mythical creatures usually portrayed by mysterious, seductive females with long, sweeping fish tails.  Mermaids are thought to sing to men on ships enchanting them and distracting them from their work. Some stories tell of mermaids obtaining immortality by marrying human beings.

This exhibit is a collaboration by seven local artists. Prolific working artist Kathy Daywalt is the exhibit’s featured artist. Kathy portrays mermaids in watercolor and in linoleum block prints.  Also included in the exhibit are oil paintings by Victor Nizovtsev and Judy Fox, sculpture by Margie Courtney and Kelly Richard, scrimshaw by Jane Tukarski and watercolor paintings by Elizabeth Bremer.

Kathy Daywalt, a resident of Anne Arundel County with over 30 years of experience, grew up on the South River.  She was the true “water baby”.  Feet up and head down, she spent hours being a mermaid and trying to breath underwater.  These early memories inspired her to create her series of mermaids. Her whimsical Chesapeake mermaids illustrate Daywalt’s skill and wit.
