Folger’s Shoe Recycle Drive Collects Hundreds of Shoes

The drive will help people in Anne Arundel all the way to Honduras.

Folger McKinsey Elementary School’s two Girls on the Run teams just wrapped up a successful shoe recycle drive that reached those in need from Anne Arundel all the way to Honduras.

The teams collected shoes from May 13-19 and received several hundred donations, according to a parent. The girls then sorted the shoes, which were donated to a local group called HOPE.

The rest of the shoes were given to the Good Neighbors Group, which is based in Severna Park and helps community members in need. Group founder Julie Shay sent a portion of the shoes to children in Honduras through Project School Supplies.

Any shoes collected that could not be worn were recycled through the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program, and will be grounded down and made into sports surfaces like courts, turf fields and tracks.
