1 Injured, 15 Displaced In Fire At Silver Spring Apartment Building

SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Fire & Rescue personnel extinguished an early morning fire that caused and estimated $80,000 in damage at a Silver Spring apartment building on Friday, according to a post on the department's official Twitter account.

MCFRS units responded around 2:45 a.m., to The Elizabeth House apartments at 1400 Fenwick Lane for the report of a fire on the fourth floor. After rescuing the sole occupant of the apartment, fire personnel extinguished the blaze.

The resident was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and not immediately life-threatening but potentially serious injuries, according to MCFRS.

Although some of apartments were unoccupied due to a renovation, approximately 15 residents were displaced.

When the automatic fire alarm was activated, a maintenance worker located the fire, which was contained by the residential sprinkler, according the the Twitter post.

Fire inspectors determined that the fire was caused by an electrical failure in an electric cord plugged into a space heater. Water damage was reported on the second through fourth floors. Total damage was estimated at $80,000, according to MCFRS.
