Creator Con Festival Illuminates Diversity in Technology, Gaming and Arts

MoCo students design their own annual Comic Con meets E3 festival to bridge communities to professionals in the STEM industries.

The 2016 Creator Con is held on Saturday, April 23rd from 2pm - 8pm at James Hubert Blake High School (300 Norwood Rd, Silver Spring, Maryland 20905). 2016 Creator Con is an interactive festival that bridges together our communities with the video game, comic book, technology and education industries to inspire students of all ages.

Creator Con is a collaboration of several schools in MCPS, as well as local colleges & universities to provide opportunities for professionals to engage with students to inspire creativity and celebrate diversity within the arts in a positive festival experience. Creator Con is a grass-roots festival that began from the creativity of MCPS students themselves, and is focused on providing an experience unlike your typical conventions today. Students want to connect with video game developers, engineers, designers and comic book artists to explore new worlds in innovation they never heard of or have seen before.
Our festival not only connects students to exploring new innovations and interactive technologies. Importantly, Creator Con provides a down-to-earth, positive networking opportunity for professionals in the arts, gaming, technology and education industries.
This year we are excited to feature interactive presentations from Mark Teare, Fallout 4's Visual FX Artist at Bethesda Game Studios. Over 100 artists to include Sam Ellis from Adventure Time and Archer. Panels include Pathways to Creativity, Crafting a Career in the Arts Industry, Artist Alley 101, Cosplay Crafting and more. In addition, we are thrilled to provide hands-on prototypes where several game companies showcase and demo their games to include Oculus Rift's Virtual Reality, Unity, Kinect-Motion projects, and Augmented Reality. Students from MICA, The Art Institute of Washington DC, UMBC, University of Baltimore, Montgomery College, and several others are excited to present their interactive team projects. This year, we're showcasing over a hundred artists & developers from the comic book and gaming industries in a comic-con setting to allow students direct access to walk-up and talk to all of the developers and artists.
Over the past few years, we have had an enormous amount of positive support which has allowed this student-designed festival to grow into this year's 2016 Creator Con. With assistance from designers at Bethesda, BreakAway Games and Firaxis, MCPS students began creating their our festival back in December 2013 as Blakescape.
