SILVER SPRING, MD — Montgomery County Police arrested 31-year-old Freddy Obi on Tuesday in connection with a series of armed carjacking-related incidents that took place in the Burstonsville and Silver Spring areas in the same night in March.
Officers responded around 6:13 p.m., on March 22, for the report of an attempted armed carjacking in the 14900 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. The reporting party told police that they saw a man leaving the area after an attempted armed carjacking failed. He was driving a white Ford Fusion with a damaged back bumper, according to police.
At about the same time, officers were also called to the 14900 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville for the report of another attempted arm robbery that failed. The suspect was see driving off in a white Ford Fusion with a damaged rear bumper, according to police.
At around 6:21 p.m., police responded to the report of another carjacking in the 14700 block of Good Hope Road in Silver Spring. In this instance, a suspect, later identified as Obi, was seen getting out of a white Ford Fusion with a damaged back bumper. He then approached the victim, demanded their keys, and drove off in their vehicle, according to police.
After locating the Ford Fusion at the Silver Spring crime scene, investigators determined that it was registered to Obi.
Officers from the Laurel Police Department in Prince George's County arrested Obi around 6:50 p.m. for an unrelated crime, according to police. They also recovered the stolen vehicle from the Silver Spring crime scene.
Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Obi on May 21, charging him with carjacking, attempted armed carjacking, first-degree assault and robbery, according to police.
On Tuesday, police served Obi with the warrant and took him to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was held without bond.
