• MCPS: district experiencing growing $3B maintenance backlog (bethesdamagazine.com) — Montgomery County Public Schools is entering the new year with a $3 billion maintenance backlog, even as it finishes replacing JoAnn Leleck Elementary at Broad Acres and tackles HVAC work at Drew Elementary in Silver Spring. Staff at Drew say renovation problems and last-minute surprises are complicating preparations, highlighting how aging buildings and limited funding are directly affecting Silver Spring students and teachers.
   

• Montgomery County Schools Cut Staff as Enrollment Drops (wmal.com) — Montgomery County Public Schools will start Tuesday with fewer students and a $3.72 billion budget that still forces cuts to hundreds of support staff, many serving Spanish-speaking families. Officials are also tightening security after a shooting at Blake High School in Silver Spring and expanding strict cellphone bans, while immigration enforcement fears continue to affect local enrollment and student mental health.
