Bites Nearby: Parkway Deli

With virtually limitless choices for dining out in Silver Spring, how do you know which places are worth your hard earned dollars (and time)? Well, Bites Nearby will get you patched in to all the best places in the area.

So many people want to know whatโ€™s new, whatโ€™s the next big thing or what is that trendy new place like? But there is something to be said for the tried and true, the familiar. For more than 47 years, the Parkway Deli has served up comfort food to Silver Springers by way of The Big Apple with about the most authentic New York Deli fare around.

Parkwayโ€™s fare pretty much covers the spectrum, from eggs, pancakes, salty breakfast meats and a variety of smoked fish for breakfast; salads, soups and limitless meats, cheeses and toppings combining for virtually limitless styles of sandwiches for lunch and classics like brisket, stuffed cabbage and baked chicken for dinner. Oh yeah, there is also a HUGE dessert case โ€“ cakes, pies, cookies, rugelach, ice cream and more.

If youโ€™ve read this far, you may be saying โ€œhmm, sounds like most other delis around, what makes Parkway worth my time?โ€ In my opinion, there are at least three things that separate Parkway from other local places - the pickle bar, the โ€œMeal in Itselfโ€ and the matzoh ball soup.

The pickle bar: full on dill, half-sour, bread and butter, sweet, pickled beets, tomatoes, giardiniera, peppers and more โ€“ theyโ€™re all there (and itโ€™s FREE!)

The โ€œMeal in Itself,โ€ is my go-to deli sandwich in Silver Spring. Fresh rye bread, juicy cole slaw, Russian dressing and one-half pound of corned beef combine to somehow make something much greater than the sum of its parts. While it may not be quite โ€œMan vs. Food Nation-worthyโ€ the sandwich is huge, and may require the use of a spotter!

And last, but certainly not least, is the matzoh ball soup. Dense, yet somehow fluffy matzoh balls are submerged in a rich and well-seasoned chicken broth brimming with carrots, celery and onions. ย

Parkway is a short drive from downtown Silver Spring, but is well worth the extra effort!

The Parkway Deli is located at 8317 Grubb Road, Silver Spring. Mon-Weds 8:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m.,ย Thu-Fri 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., Sat 7:00 a.m. โ€“ 10:00 a.m. and Sun 7:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m. The dining room and carryout close one half hour earlier, but beer, wine, drinks, desserts, bagels and chips from the โ€œmini-storeโ€ in the front are still available until the listed times.
