Cat Rescued from Burtonsville House Fire, Damage Totals $100K

Smoke alarms alerted a Burtonsville resident to a house fire; firefighters saved the family cat from the smoke.

BURTONSVILLE, MD — A cat trapped on the second floor of a Burtonsville family home was rescued Tuesday by Montgomery County firefighters, who tended to the kitty on a gurney at the scene.

The house in the 14400 block of Turbridge Court sustained an estimated $100,000 damage in the Tuesday afternoon fire, and displaced the family who lives there, according to the Montgomery County Fire Department. Other than the smoke suffered by the family pet, there were no injuries, said Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer.

It took 45 firefighters to put out the fire; firefighters from Prince George’s and Howard counties provided mutual aid.

Piringer said the fire began in combustible materials near the furnace in the home's basement. Smoke alarms alerted a resident in the house to the fire, and the resident got safely out of the house.
