Chipotle To Shutter All 15 ShopHouse Locations, 3 In Maryland

SILVER SPRING, MD — Chipotle hoped to do for Asian food what they did for Mexican food, but it didn't quote work out. Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. will shutter all 15 ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen restaurants by March 17, according to reports.

The build-your-own Asian dish restaurant first opened in Dupont Circle in 2011. Since then, ShopHouse has expanded to other locations in DC, including Chinatown, Georgetown and Union Station, and a handful of other states like Maryland, California and Illinois.

According to Nation's Restaurant News, Chipotle said in its most recent annual report that ShopHouse was not able to generate enough sales to justify future investment.

“We now have a deal in place to sell the ShopHouse leases and believe that is the right decision at this time,” Chris Arnold, a spokesman for Chipotle, said in an email to Nation’s Restaurant News.

Back in October, Chipotle said that the company had "decided not to invest further in developing and growing the ShopHouse brand and will pursue strategic alternatives."

The fast-casual restaurant serves customizable noodle, rice and salad bowls with assorted toppings and tamarind, peanut, curry and chili sauces.

The Maryland locations include:

• Silver Spring, 935 Ellsworth Dr.
• Bethesda, 4820 Bethesda Ave.
• North Bethesda, 11584 Old Georgetown Rd.

ShopHouse lovers are taking to Twitter to express their disappointment with this news:

Two other Chipotle-spinoffs remain open: Tasty Made, the fast-casual burger concept that opened in October 2016; and Pizzeria Locale, another fast-casual, assembly-line pizza joint.
