Eastbound University Boulevard Will Open for Tuesday Evening Commute

Crews continue repairs tied to two water main breaks in Silver Spring, even as a new leak emerged. Road work will be done by Thursday.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Crews continue to replace roadway torn up after repairs were made to two large water mains that broke, with all eastbound lanes of University Boulevard in Silver Spring expected to be open for the Tuesday afternoon commute, utility officials said.

Portions of the road have been closed between Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue since Sunday, while crews fixed another leak early Tuesday morning on the 12-inch water main that was repaired the night before.

WSSC crews replaced the leaking section of pipe in the area of 807 University Boulevard and had the water main back in service by 2 p.m.

Repairs to the eastbound lanes of University Boulevard between Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue continue. One eastbound lane was open at 3 p.m. Tuesday and all eastbound lanes will be open by 4 p.m. Final restoration to the eastbound lanes is expected to be finished by Wednesday evening.

One westbound lane is open. The remaining westbound lanes will remain closed through Monday night. Repairs to the westbound lanes are expected to be finished on Thursday.

Two 12-inch water mains broke Sunday in the 800-block of University Boulevard within five hours. Repairs to both were finished Monday.

The water main that runs in this area of University Boulevard is 89 years old, the utility says.
