On Saturday, October 15, at 8 AM Northwood will host the Third Annual Downcounty Consortium Cross-Country Championship races for elementary, middle, and high school runners, as well as an open 5K trail race for anybody. This is a green running event with biodegradable cups, shoe donations, posted (not printed) course maps, and local produce for snacks. The courses at Northwood include the recently created Northwood Chesapeake Bay Trail. Races begin with the high school boys' and girls' 5K championship races, followed by the middle school and elementary school 2.5Ks. The morning ends with an open 5K that anybody can register and run in. Races start on the athletic fields behind Northwood High School. Funds raised beyond providing free races for DCC elementary and middle school students will go towards development of a natural surface trail connecting Northwest Branch Park to through the existing Breewood Park across University Blvd. from Northwood High School. Northwood students created the in the 2009-2010 school year. This is the next step in that trail building. For details see the Breewood Park Trail Proposal in PDF or Powerpoint format.
