Fire Does $1M Damage; Dozen Residents Evacuated at Leisure World (Update)

A fire was reported in a unit at 3620 Gleneagles Drive, authorities said. No residents were injured; one cat is missing.

Montgomery County firefighters evacuated 11 residents from 10 apartments at Leisure World as they battled a blaze at the facility.

Fire damage was estimated at more than $1 million, authorities said.

Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said on Twitter that at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday firefighters encountered heavy smoke when they arrived. Additional units were called in to assist in attacking the fire.

Fire was reported on all levels of the apartment building at 3620 Gleneagles Drive in Silver Spring.

One dog was rescued by firefighters; there were no injuries reported to residents, while two firefighters were injured, neither seriously, Piringer said.

The fire appears to have started in a first floor unit and extended to others.

One cat is missing, he said.
