Local Theatre Company Undergoing Major Renovations to Better Serve the Community
The Highwood Theatre in Downtown Silver Spring has launched their "Creating Our Future" Capital Campaign to raise funds for a new theatre

The Highwood Theatre in downtown Silver Spring is thrilled to announce their biggest endeavor to date. The local non-profit theatre company is about to nearly double the size of their space, adding a larger theatre with twice the audience capacity that will enable them to serve more students and expand their services to the community.
Over the past few years, every part of the organization has grown tremendously. Highwood mounts over 10 student productions, provides various after school and home-school offerings, continues to produce professional productions with rave reviews, and last season alone worked in 23 area schools, serving more than 2,400 students. For more detail about last year's achievements and what's in store for this season, visit their Season Highlights page. It is thanks to the hard work, dedication and above-and-beyond effort by Highwood's staff and volunteers that have made these remarkable achievements possible.
This year, by taking advantage of the unique expansion opportunity that presented itself, The Highwood Theatre will be able to continue this growth and cement its place in the local theatre community. Substantially expanding Highwood’s physical footprint in their existing building in downtown Silver Spring (outlined on this page) will enable them not only to add a new larger theatre, but will also add dressing rooms, enlarge the workshop and other tech space, and provide an additional affordably-priced performance venue to the local artistic community. With this expansion, Highwood can continue to meet the needs of the community and schools, and can better fulfill their mission of welcoming all into the creative process of theatre.

But of course, they cannot do it alone!
Highwood is asking the community to for special support to make this exciting expansion a reality. Their new 3-Phase Campaign ー “Creating Our Future” ー is designed to raise a total of $150,000 over the next nine months to support the renovation, outfitting, and purchasing of equipment necessary to accomplish and complete this expansion. This is a big challenge, but the Highwood staff are confident that with the help of loyal supporters and the leadership of their Parents’ Campaign Committee, they can meet it and create a new, bigger theatre, rehearsal and workshop space that Highwood participants and audiences can all enjoy.

The goal in Phase I is to raise $50,000 by the end of December ー including $25,000 they have nearly raised which will enable them to complete a quick, bare-bones reconfiguration of the new space to accommodate the mid-December Students’ Theatre production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. The remainder is necessary for the other winter programs including their professional production Boeing Boeing and other student productions in January-March, 2017. Phases II and III will cover the rest of the remodeling and outfitting required to finish and enable them to use all the new space. Several generous donors have already come forward to help toward completing the first goal, but they will need more help to meet it in this short time frame. Stay tuned for more details, tours of the new space, and other ways to support this local organization!
