MCPS Loosens Education Requirements For Substitute Teachers
Amid a substitute teacher shortage and enrollment increases, MCPS is lowering its education requirements for fill-in instructors.
SILVER SPRING, MD — The highly regarded Montgomery County public school system has lowered its education requirements for prospective substitute teachers to try and keep pace with vacancies and enrollment increases.
Historically, applicants needed at least a bachelor's degree to work as a substitute teacher for MCPS. But now, candidates can apply for the job if they have a minimum of 60 college credits, according to school officials. The county's revised education requirements are more in line with those of other regional school systems, including Frederick, Howard, and Prince George's counties.
"MCPS expects this change to increase the number of available substitutes; decrease unfilled vacancies; limit the need for in-school class coverage; lead to a more diverse range of candidates; and help build partnerships with local colleges while candidates earn their degree," MCPS said in a statement.
