MODERN LILIES TALK hosted by the Silver Spring Garden Club

Gorgeous scent-filled lilies are a MUST for your garden!

The Silver Spring Garden Club invites you to:

A talk on MODERN LILIES

An introduction to the history of garden lilies with an emphasis on the
background and development of the modern super lilies. Virtually all of the
images used will be of lilies grown locally — lilies you, too, can grow.

The speaker, James A. McKenney, is a past president (multiple times) of the
Potomac Lily Society, a member of the North American Lily Society, a member
of and active participant in the discussion list conducted by the Pacific
Bulb Society, and a member of the North American Rock Garden Society and
the Scottish Rock Garden Club. He has been blogging at My Virtual Maryland
Garden since 2007 (see http://mcwort.blogspot.com/). There are currently
over 650 blog entries, almost all based on plants grown locally in his
gardens.

WHEN: Monday, September 21, 8:00pm
(Doors open at 7:30pm)

WHERE: Montgomery College
Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus
Health Sciences Center Building
Room 122

The September meeting refreshments will be provided by club members: Pat
Corcoran, Sue Smith, and Michael Alexander.

NOTE: This talk is about true lilies (Lillium), not to be confused with
daylilies (Hemerocallis). All true lilies are grown from a bulb of
overlapping scales. There are about 100 species of lilies, but lilies are
generally defined by their classification, such as Asiatic, Oriental, and
Martagon (Turk’s cap). While Lilium are pretty much always called lilies,
many of us casually refer to daylilies as simply lilies, too. Source:
