Overnight Lane Closures As Beltway Resurfaced in Silver Spring

Maryland highway crews have begun work to resurface part of I-495 in Silver Spring; lanes will be closed at night into July.

SILVER SPRING, MD – Drivers in Montgomery County should look out for lane closures at night as crews put down a new driving surface on a portion of I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Silver Spring.

Work began Thursday by crews to resurface I-495 between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and US 29 (Colesville Road). Weather permitting, resurfacing should be complete by mid-July. All phases of work will begin on the outer loop of I-495 and progress to the inner loop.

To perform the work, crews will close the following lanes on I-495 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays:

  • One lane at 8 p.m.
  • Two lanes at 10 p.m.
  • Three lanes at midnight
  • Intermittent full traffic stops of up to 15 minutes between midnight and 4 a.m.

Crews will patch, grind, resurface and apply new pavement markings to all beltway traffic lanes, including the inner and outer loop ramps to MD 193.

Drivers should consider MD 650 or US 29 as alternates during resurfacing. Plan ahead, be aware of changing traffic patterns and expect work zone delays.
