Rookie Lottery Player Wins $50K in Scratch-Off Game

A Silver Spring woman wins the top prize on a $50,000 Gold Rush game in her first try, say Maryland Lottery officials.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A new Maryland resident just found her golden ticket to a big pay day hiding in the three Maryland Lottery scratch-offs she randomly selected and purchased at a local liquor store.

The married 34-year-old who lives in Silver Spring stopped by Maryland Farms Super Liquors in Beltsville. Not familiar with Lottery games, the novice player selected three $50,000 Gold Rush instant tickets and was in anything but a rush to scratch them off. Instead, she kept them in her purse for the next five days.

When she finally scratched them off at home, the Silver Spring resident thought she had a $5,000 winner and went to the retailer to confirm her prize. Instead, she got even better news: The federal government employee had found the game’s last $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
