Senators Mikulski and Cardin, Congressman Van Hollen and County Executive Leggett Honor Leisure World's 50th Anniversary
Leisure World of Maryland celebrated it's 50th anniversary with a picnic on the lanai attended by several state and local dignitaries.

Leisure World, Md., September 11 — National, state and local officials took time today to honor the 50th anniversary of the Leisure World of Maryland community at a greater patriotic picnic attended by some 400 of the community’s 8,000 residents. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Sen. Ben Cardin, Cong. Chris Van Hollen and Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett all paid tribute to the community’s positive impact on the region during a program hosted by Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy and featuring a patriotic singalong led by the Leisure World Choral.
The program also recognized the visionaries that helped create the community, notably Giuseppe Cecchi, president of the IDI Group Companies, who successfully completed the community starting in 1982; Heidi Cortese of RCC, Inc., whose father, Ross Cortese, pioneered Leisure World recreation-oriented, active adult concept; and Robert Sullivan, who served for decades as the community’s general manager. Other officials in attendance for the celebration included Craig Zucker, Roger Manno and Brian Feldman from the Maryland Senate; Marice Morales, William Smith, Jr. and Ben Kramer from the Maryland House of Delegates; Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot; Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh; Maryland Secretary of Aging Rona Kramer; Montgomery County Council President Nancy Floreen; Montgomery County Council Members Sidney Katz, George Leventhal, Hans Reimer and Tom Hucker; and Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein.

Founded in 1966, Leisure World of Maryland is celebrating its 50th anniversary in September 2016. Located in Montgomery County, the state's premier active adult community is home to more than 8,000 diverse residents age 55 and older.
