Silver Spring Pedestrian Hit, Killed By Truck On Beltway

Maryland State Police are trying to determine why a Silver Spring man was walking on the Beltway when he was fatally hit by a truck.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Authorities are trying to determine why a Silver Spring man was walking on the Beltway Tuesday afternoon, where he was fatally hit by a tractor-trailer truck. The fatal accident happened just after 3:30 p.m. on the eastbound I-495/Inner Loop-Washington Beltway east of New Hampshire Avenue.

Investigators say a 2015 International truck tractor was eastbound on I-495 when it struck a pedestrian who was walking on the roadway in the right lane. The driver of the truck was identified as Richard Mitchell, 46, Cordova, Tennessee. The pedestrian was identified as Mark Armstrong, 66, Silver Spring.

For unknown reasons, Armstrong was walking on the highway when he was struck by the trailer portion of the truck tractor. He died from his injuries as a result of the collision.

Maryland State Police say so far, there is no indication the truck driver was impaired.

The two right lanes of eastbound I-495 were closed for about three hours during the investigation.
