Silver Spring Staples Closes
The Silver Spring Staples is one of the 70 stores the company announced they would close by the end of the year.

SILVER SPRING, MD — The Staples Office Superstore on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring closed Saturday, according to reports.
The Staples at 9440 Georgia Ave. is one of the 70 stores the company announced they would close by the end of the year. The March announcement came after Staples tried to merge with competitor Office Depot, but the deal was blocked by the Federal Trade Commission, reports CNN Money.

Last May, the company announced that it was focusing its efforts on smaller companies that employ 200 employees or less. According to Fortune, Staples added 1,000 to its sales force and is putting a push on its private label.
The company closed 13 stores during the fourth quarter of 2016 and 48 stores for the full year in North America and ended the year with 1,255 stores in the U.S. and 304 stores in Canada.

Three other area stores were also closed: 12389 Georgia Ave., 6800 Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase, and 12008 Cherry Hill Rd. According to Source of the Spring, the rumored replacement for Staples is ALDI, a discount grocery chain.
